Q: What is a barred blocked phone?

A: A stolen mobile phone and useless

Q: How does a mobile get barred or blocked?

A: When a person buys a cheap on a contract or pre-pay tariff on Vodafone network and the person either:

•  Loses their mobile phone and reports this to their service or network provider

•  Has their mobile stolen and reports this to their service or network provider

Q: What happens when a mobile phone is reported lost or stolen to their network?

A: The network provider then puts the serial number (the IMEI number of the phone) on a shared blacklist database. This list stops any phone on it from registering on any network. The phone is now no good to anyone; it should not be bought for spare parts and it is a criminal offence to handle it. If you find such a phone it should be handed in to the police so that it can be returned to the owner as he or she may have some important numbers, text messages or pictures in the memory of the mobile phone

Q: What should I do if I buy a second- hand mobile?

A: Check to find out where the second- hand or new phone you are buying has come from and whether the phone is on a contract or Prepay. It's common for people to abuse the insurance on their phone by selling it, then later on reporting it as stolen. That way they get a replacement phone whilst the person they have sold the phone to lose out as their phone will be barred and blocked. Make sure that if you buy a phone you register the phone with your network provider as if the phone gets barred at a later date you are mostly covered. Unfortunately there isn't a database that allows the public to call up an automated service and check if the phone has been barred and where the phone originated

Q: Is changing the IMEI the same as unlocking?

A: Mobile networks often lock handsets so that they are only able to operate on specific networks. The unlocking of handsets to allow them to operate on any network is not against the law and is not the same as changing the IMEI

"Why would I want to unlock my phone?”

Well if you want to change network suppliers i.e. Vodafone NZ. Basically in New Zealand there is no competition with Vodafone but if you bring a phone from your country and try to activate it in New Zealand , it prevents your phone from accepting a New Zealand sim card. The network provider in your country doesn't want you to join someone else for the obvious reason that they would lose out on your money!

But we're not just picking on Vodafone here; there are hundreds of network operators around the globe that lock their phones onto their networks.

So, what do we do? We simply un-lock the sim locks from the phone so that you can use it at any network you like - the way we think it should be!

•  Is it illegal?

No!

Unlocking phones is completely legal. Do not confuse unlocking with unblocking. Unblocking is also known as IMEI changing and is completely unacceptable.

So if you have no information on the history of your mobile phone it is best that you recover all information and if not possible be prepared to be turned away from us as we will may not be able to unlock your mobile. Unlocking will not work with a BARRED mobile that has been reported lost or stolen to the network provider.

•  IMEI Changing, do we do it?

No!

IMEI changing is illegal ; so don't even bother to ask us!

•  How does it work?

Easy! Just send your mobile in a well packed recorded or registered mail padded bag (preferably registered mail) and enclose a copy of your Service Request Form . Please also provide us with any access PIN codes to access your phone and the battery. If you not provide us your PIN codes to access your phone we will need to unlock your code by applying another service charge on you. Our service charge may only apply to one particular lock either network lock or handset code lock . You will only need to pay once we confirm your phone is successfully unlocked.

We will get your phone back to you as soon as the work is done.

•  How long does it take?

We can send most phones back to you on the same day as receiving them, but please call us before sending to confirm this; some phones may take an extra day or two if they have software problem on your phone, and probably we need to flash your phone.
